I have met the enemy.....

.....and his name is "stump."
After three and a half hours of hard labor, I finally had to make a concession. Despite hacking through most of the surrounding roots with the spade, there were some that just went down, and down, probably into infinity.
So, I opted for whacking off the part above ground with the sledge hammer, which in itself, was somewhat satisfying.
I was working on this until after 8:00 last night, but had to quit on account of darkness. Oh yeah, there the little matter of supper, too. It's amazing how a meal of pork and potatoes can morph into scrambled eggs and toast, as time goes by. I threw in chocolate milk as a beverage, and you'd have thought they died and went to Dairy Queen, they were so happy. Other than the two youngest, chocolate milk comes around 'bout once a year.
So, getting back to the stump, I felt further hacking would be futile, and so, I'll just sweep it under the dirt, so to speak. But it was not wasted effort, for I figure I worked off at least a pound.
Ethan and Nolan stand at the site of my "Waterloo," Nolan being the one with the contorted face.
And now I see lunch is running late. We seem to have a theme, going here.... Tweet

Hmm, I'd say both faces look slightly contorted.
