Out Ioway

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of Heaven and earth,
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber.

Sometimes the world looks better upside down

All was quiet in the living room as various children, deposited on various couches worked diligently on various studies.

I was sitting beside Nolan as he struggled through subtraction with renaming (not just once, but twice). It's not difficult for him, just laborious. And for some strange reason, he feels the proper way to tackle the job is to repeatedly look around, compare number patterns in problems he is not solving, make REALLY dark lines with his pencil....all interspersed with heavy sighs and, "This is so hard."

So I am trying to keep my cool and maintain that delicate balance between measured encouragement and bursting out with, "JUST DO THE PROBLEM, fer cryin' out loud!" when I hear this giggling start....

I looked up to see Trevor doing a very credible headstand (better than the picture shows). I figured a short break to capture this for posterity wouldn't hurt. (and believe me, I plan to show this to his kids some day)

Which reminds me....if I want these guys to have a chance to provide for a family, I'd better get back to educating and laying the groundwork for a decent high school transcript and good test scores that may help to acquire an academic scholarship so they can get into college, earn a degree and nail a job that will provide medical benefits for them and theirs and all the assorted heart health situations that are sure to follow.

But hey, no pressure.....

I cry.

Nolan's method of math sounds so oddly reminiscent of some of my various ninth graders...
