Holiday Madness
Whoever decided February 8th was good for
Kite Flying Day
probably never lived in Iowa.
Or anywhere north of the 35th parallel.
Seeing as there's still snow on the ground and we woke up to a -28 degree wind chill (-33 C), I can say with absolute and totalitarian certainty that we will NOT be participating in any type of kite flying to-day.
February 8th is also Boy Scouts Day which seems a little more reasonable. I can envision some hardy scouts making a snug igloo and roasting venison steaks over a spit.
Personally, I prefer huddling in the living room around a good Tolkien novel. (we're almost finished with The Hobbit :-) After that, you toss the kids in bed and then snuggle into the flannel sheets with the electric blanket cranked to a modest 3. Throw in a couple of old sitcoms and you've got the perfect end to the day.
But that perfect ending is hours away.
And when you make repeated typing errors, it's time to take a snooze...

The Hobbit is a favorite of mine too, but I've never read it out loud. How do you deal with all those strange names--or did they crop up in the trilogy after Frodo hit the road?
Bluff. I just pretend I know what I'm doing and read with confidence, hoping they won't notice if I don't pronounce something consistently...heh, heh.
Actually though, I have to stop sometimes and admit, "I don't know how that's pronounced, so I'll just pick this way..." And then sometimes, I end up looking up a word, like "eyrie" of Eagles Eyrie, and find out I've been using the less familiar way all these years.
I have a sister-in-law who started reading The Hobbit to her children and had attempted to differentiate her voice for each of the dwarves, but had to give that up :-)
And after watching LOTR, I discovered I've been pronouncing "Gandalf" wrong all these years, and that has been the hardest adjustment.
Of course, I think my way is better (Gand-olf, as opposed to Gand-alf), but it's really hard to argue with older kids who claim the movie must be right...
Obviously, I don't even make an attempt at the elven language.
