The Holidays of November
Another month has rolled into view, heralding in that notorious period of the year when stores hope to get you going and coming.
I'll just assume most everybody knows about Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. and move on to the lesser known celebratory days.
November is:
Latin American Month
Apple Month
International Drum Month....now wait just a minute...
I seem to remember these last two being mentioned last month...*goes to check*...
THEY WERE!
Clearly unfair. Apples may be in season for three months but you just can't HAVE three months of being a national month, fer cryin' out loud!
Methinks even ONE international drum month, let alone two, is excessive. Perhaps a drum hour. (unless their doing "Sing, Sing, Sing." Then I don't care)
Ma cries "FOUL."
Anyways...November is:
National Peanut Butter Lovers Month
Native-American Heritage Month
Model Railroad Month
Onward to today!
Sandwich Day, in honor of John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich. It's his birthday. (interesting fellow, but don't try to find out from the link on the page of the above link--it goes nowhere)
And now....*drum roll*....dat, da da dat, dat, dat DAH! Yes folks, it's
HOUSEWIFE DAY!!!
Naturally, there is no information on how this supposed holiday originated or how it is to be celebrated. My guess is that it's another ploy by the greeting card industry coupled with the U.S. Post Office to try and remain solvent.
Just as naturally, no housewife will get to take the day off because if she did, she'd first have to:
a) plan simple meals for other people to make and see that they make them
b) write up a schedule for the day to make sure her usual tasks are taken care of by others
c) assign people to read the schedule and actually carry it out
d) get someone else to mail the letter that was supposed to go out before breakfast
e) paying someone to nag about all the above
It's really much easier just to do it yourself.
This Day in History:
1839 1st opium war-2 British frigates engage several Chinese junks
1917 1st class mail now costs $0.03
1928 Turkey switches from Arabic to Roman alphabet
1930 Bank of Italy becomes Bank of America
1952 Clarence Birdseye markets frozen peas
1953 "Sacrifice fly" reactivated in baseball (1939)
1979 63 Americans taken hostage at US Embassy (Teheran, Iran)
1992 Bill Clinton elected US President
2007 Jason Hoyt competes in computer programming competition in Ada, OK
