Out Ioway

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of Heaven and earth,
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber.

The Latest

This is Ma Hoyt, reporting live from Iowa-where-stuff-is-falling-from-the-sky or as the headline banner says on the KWWL local news: The Big STORM.

We awoke to just a dusting of snow on the ground and now the flaky stuff has changed to sleet.....wait, this just in from our intrepid on-the-spot-reporter, Trevor Hoyt:

"Mommy! It's just sizzling in dat living woom!"

Apparently, sleet sounds like something sizzling in a frying pan :-)

And there you have it folks, straight from the Bunny's mouth.

Even though our present temperature is a definite below freezing 26 degrees, there is a layer of warm air above us that is making for the tricky precip. Word has it that everything should change over to rain eventually and then go back to snow tomorrow morning.

Sounds messy but is not expected to be like last February when the ice-storm-of-the-century wreaked havoc.

Most importantly, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers have NOT postponed their playoff game with the Delaware Blue Hens so we can all rest in the knowledge that greed and stupidity still have a role in these here United States.

But aside from incidental ruminations such as whether UNI should be held culpable if anyone is injured or dies in an accident traveling to and from the game during a declared winter storm, I'm sure you've wondered--as have I--what on earth persuaded the University of Delaware to adopt such an intimidating mascot name?

The blue hen is the Delaware state bird :-) and you can find out more about it, here.

I would just have to say that while Iowa's cutesome goldfinch state bird may be smaller, more strikingly handsome and have a prettier call, Delaware does have us beat in the area of multi-use as their official bird can double as Sunday's dinner.

But I'll hafta add I would rather see a goldfinch on my bird feeder than a blue hen, any day.

Ma had better close this up since the Internet connection looks to be getting iffy. Even if we don't lose electricity I'll just bet our provider will go down. In the meantime, may I recommend my very favorite Christmas CD?

It is "Highland Christmas" (Reflections) by the McCallans.

I bought it in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart several years ago so I don't know about its current availability but be sure and snap it up if you ever see it!

Bagpipes, harp, flute, piano and more. A superb ensemble.

And you can trust my musical tastes 'cause I like Opera, Big Band, Bluegrass and....*cough*....a couple others we won't mention.

TRUST ME.

From the heartland of the storm, this is Ma...

...over and out.

Ooo, my favorite Christmas cd is Amy Grant's...ok, I'm not sure which one, 'cause she's got at least 3 of them, but it's got "Breath of Heaven" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" on it. But, you know, I always liked the old cassette tape of "We Sing Christmas Songs." If I could find that on cd (without actually having to look for it), I'm pretty sure I'd snatch it up.

Aww, I had We Sing Bible Songs and We Sing Nursery Rhymes, too! Maybe I should get all of them. I'm gonna be too cheap for now, though.
