Ma's Newsy Master Garden Nugget, and more

So...we were tossing around the exciting subject of sodic soils last night before class officially started (yes, Master Gardeners and their apprentices are a fun bunch) and the facilitator brought up how in chemistry class the teacher used to pop a bit of salt into some water and the kids would get the fun of a seeing the water react? Am I getting this right?? (can you tell I never took chemistry?)

Then one of our instructors on herbaceous ornamentals--who happens to have a degree in chemistry--mentioned that SHE heard from her brother that they don't do that anymore, after some pranksters threw a 10-pound block of salt into Lake LaVerne and the ensuing explosion blew out all the windows facing the lake.

WELL, you can bet that despite my intense interest, Ma did NOT speak up to ask for further explanation....after all, I'm only a Master Gardener Apprentice and don't want to reveal my ignorance in matters of explosives.

So if someone could just fill me in on this topic, I'd be most appreciative.

Being able to blow things up with salt sodium could come in handy, some day.

Back to the weird....

Don't know if you've had a chance to see the semi-funny Seinfeld-Gates commercials, but they've already been pulled. Some of my kids saw the main one...once, and thought it hilarious. I did too, though Bill Gates is a pretty bad actor.

However, thanks to YouTube, nothing really goes away forever :-)
