Out Ioway

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of Heaven and earth,
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber.

This is the first day...

...of the rest of my century.

Many thanks for the kind birthday wishes of yesterday.

I also got birthday calls from Kendra and Ardith last night, so I guess all that Internet nagging paid off.

Some of you may ask, "What about the son...Jason?"

To which I reply, "What son?"

(I'm kidding, Jason :-) Don't feel bad about not calling home. I could have passed out from shock and hit my head, so you probably saved us a trip to ER. Besides, you were undoubtedly working hard on your Linear Algebra homework. Just let me know if you want any help with that, since I could definitely be more help now than if you'd called and I'd passed out and bumped my head....)
______________

Busy, busy week afore me.

Three-hour class on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and that doesn't count the 30-minute commute, one way.

On Friday, some ladies from church are taking Dee and me out for lunch, since we've turned the milestones of 60 and 50, respectively.

I think it's really sweet being taken out to lunch like that. How many times do you turn 50 or 60, after all?

Usually only once. Though we cannot rule out the possibility that these ladies know something I don't and are treating us, "...one more time before those pathetic old ladies kick the bucket."

But seriously, I now realize I'm not one of the younger mothers in church, anymore. I'm not exactly older, yet, but I can no longer kid myself, despite anything my children said last night:

Carolyn: "Mommy, you don't look any older than 40! And you certainly don't act 50..."

Ethan: "Yeah. I don't think you look any older than 45....er, 43."

I've entered the swirling nebulous of inbetweeness. That realm where you've left the "movers and shakers" of life but haven't quite reached the stage where you're a little old lady peering over the steering wheel while people shake their fists at you.

This would be a good time to have mid-life crisis.

Except, I have too much stuff to do. These Master Gardener classes go through most of October, at two nights per week. (that's a lot of potential trouble certain people could get into while I'm away, but I'm not gonna think about that right now...too busy)

Monday will be a real humdinger since Derek has another cardiology appointment down in Iowa City. This time he gets a cardiac MRI, which they've conveniently scheduled for 8:00 in the morning. We'll be getting up no later than 4:30. I've also managed to have them schedule a consult with the oral surgeon on the same day. Hopefully they will wait to extract his wisdom teeth until after he takes the SAT on October 4th.

Once the gardening classes finish up it will be a simple matter of writing the Christmas letter, addressing a gazillion envelopes and rounding up presents (including 4 birthdays) and decorating the house (which usually means cleaning, first).

So you see, I can't POSSIBLY work in a midlife crisis at this time.

Perhaps next year...

Tell him to enjoy his long time in the tube of claustrophobia and loud noises. At least, when I had one done ages ago, it felt like I was in there for 45 minutes to an hour....

and I predict thanksgiving for the wiz teeth removal.

Ma, I forgot to wish you happy birthday yesterday, but since you were inundated with greetings from your children, it is probably OK that I waited until today.

May you have 50 more!
