Life in the Yard

 A glimpse of the main wildflower beds, just before sunset. (okay, the yellow flowers in front are Stella d'Oro daylilies that were thinned out of the overgrown courthouse garden...). But there are lots of pretty Verbena (purple flowers), a fair amount of milkweed (which I didn't have to dig out of the ditch, ha ha) and all that silvery stuff in the back is a type of wild Sage.

 Here's the Verbena (also called Vervain) up close. They spread like crazy and I believe their roots can go down ten feet or so.

Forget zombies...plants will definitely take over the word, some day.

I love the common milkweed, in bloom. Quite spectacular, actually.

Sooner or later the boys will be raising a crop of monarchs.

This is something from a wildflower mix that I planted in a small, round bed. And basically, it's driving me nuts because I can't identify it. Looked up every single name on the NK packet (Old Fashioned Garden Mixture)...looked up wildflower sites galore...anyway, it is beautiful.

Not a perfect picture but it is notable, since this is the first time a Cardinal has hung around our yard.

He's been singing in the trees every evening this week.

It's almost sounding civilized around here...








I took a walk around the yard this evening. Can't stay too long near the higher growth as the mosquitos quickly move in for the kill at dusk.

In other news, Ethan finished fixing shingles on the roof and is turning quite reddish/brown (he forgot the sunscreen today). Other than that, he and Carolyn await word for the start of detassling. Probably next week but we'll see. Getting close, anyway.

Guess they will miss the Franklin County Fair this year. They will just have to console themselves with making big bucks.

For myself, I plan to go before the last day...ain't no way I am missing out on the homemade ice cream this year.
