When forecasts don't materialize
The prediction being thunder and lightning overnight, Ma's ever-engaged gray matter went into overdrive.
I could see it now....an upset of the delicate equilibrium in the little boys' room. They sleep in triple bunks, each bed less than twin size. There's plenty of room for each individual, as long as storm-crazed fear does not drive one to force the others to "share."
The scenario: one boy climbs up and asks to sleep with another....is refused admittance...comes over to our room....wakes ME up.....
It has the potential for one little incident to lead to another, and another...eventually cascading into a sleep disturbance of epic proportions. Not to mention that whole souteast Asian domino thing.
To forestall any possible midnight awakenings, clever Ma prepared a little campout on the floor, with sleeping bags, blankets and lots of good cheer. There's just something about the camaraderie of young boys on a stormy night, all snuggled together against the fears of darkness. You may go out in a blaze of glory together, but at least your brother won't go first.
All that trouble, and nary a drop of rain nor even a small clunk of thunder.
Sometimes our best-laid fears go awry.
