Out Ioway

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of Heaven and earth,
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber.

I can't sleep.....

Which means it's time to post about criminal rodents and flying saucer birds.

First the mouse.
Yes, it would appear something has chewed its way into Ma's exclusive oatmeal. This mouse obviously has good taste, since it went for the "Old Fashioned" variety rather than Melinda's pathetic "Quick Cooking" cereal.

The bad part, was that the cannister was nearly full.

The good part, was that I did not find the mouse when lifting the compromised lid.

I decided to just toss a couple inches off the top....and so far, I haven't died. The fact that I've hardly eaten it since, is quite beside the point.

Naturally, I dug out the poison pellets.

They are an attractive shade of turquoise, and claim to be effective on "wafarin tolerant rodents." (Wafarin, you'll remember, is the generic anticoagulant that Loren used to take....though doctors frown on patients partaking of it in that form, despite its easy availability, low cost, and the fact you could purchase it without a prescription)

ANYWAY, I was told that this stuff kills the mice without the ensuing "WE HAVE A DEAD MOUSE SOMEWHERE" smell. See, they bleed to death and that's suppose to dehydrate them and.....well, you get the picture. (isn't this fun? I should really stay up late, more often)

ANY ANY-way, there have definitely been a few casualties. How do we know? Becaise there is ICKY DEAD MOUSE AROMA ALL OVER THE KITCHEN, PERMEATING OUT INTO THE ADDITION AND CREEPING OVER TO MY COMPUTER AREA.

In short, my personal space has been violated, and there is no one to sue.

Some of the kids are literally not breathing when they pass through the kitchen and head out of doors. And while I've always been a fan of breath control, this is not what I had in mind, pedagogically speaking.

Although I will say this....it is nice to put those scented candles to use, other than those days when I clean out the refrigerator.

And then, we may have hit upon a new appetite suppressant.

But enough of this odiferous talk. It's time for....

Flying saucers!
Yes, Ma has seen a UFO and even snapped a picture of it.

Oh sure, some folks might have thought it a mere bird, but I know better.

Pictures don't lie, people.

And now that the eyelids are heavy, it is time to try for sleep, once again, for tomorrow is another big day.

I shall head down to Ardith's house, to wait for the telephone guy, who claims he is coming at the precise time of, "Somewheres between nine and five. Fer sure."

That way, she won't have to miss yet a-nother day of work, get frustrated and start whining.

Best leave that to a professional.

Like me.

One more thing....we hope to have the smell gone before you return, but just to be on the safe side, you should probably look into buying one of those hazardous chemical suits.

Did you and Sharon organize it ahead of time to both post about vermin or do you have a psychic connection?

Yeah, we're psychic, in every since of the word.

I read Mommy's blog post first, but I'd already planned to post about my own animal friends.

Why not just get a cat or two?

Speaking of plastic consuming rodentia reminds me of the time we went to Vargas Island, off the west coast of Vancouver Island (they like islands up here) when Asher was a mere babe. The owners of the "resort" we were going to (I use the word loosely) picked us up in an open herring boat for the 20 minute crossing. Asher screamed in fear the whole way. Ah, good times. Anyway, we stayed in a tiny - I mean tiny - funky A-frame. (It was a little taller than we were.) We were warned that there were lots of mice, and yes, a couple of wolves on the island, but we were young and stupid, I mean, adventurous. As was our usual pattern at that time, on going to sleep, we set out a bottle for Asher's consumption during the night.
To make things easier, we removed the hard plastic cap. Without our permission, the aforementioned rodentia apparently chewed off the soft plastic nipple while we were sleeping. Around 2 am, Asher woke up hungry, so in the dark we grabbed the bottle and turned it bottoms up over his mouth. With the bottle nipple chewed off, of course, the milk cascaded all over him and the bed. Ah, good times.

So I'd get a cat or two. If someone is allergic, have them sleep outside in tents for the summer. During the winter, switch places and let the cat sleep outside.

In the meantime, how about setting up a web cam so we can watch the mice antics at night on line?

I remember looking at the label on my IV a few years ago while I was in the hospital and it said warfarin on it. I looked at my roommate and asked her why they were giving me rat poison....Her's said the same thing..It gave me a funny taste in my mouth and I could smell it in my nose....yuck...not the chemical of choice. (Not that I would be choosing any chemicals)

We had a rat in the parsonage we lived in in Ill. We fed it pretty little pellets...I found it in it's nest in our basement woodpile stiff as a board...no pun intended.

Yes, Tim, I DO have people allergic to cats. And while they might cut down on the surplus rodent population, I have this fear of having to potty-train it.

I think training the ten kids might have burned me out.

Your camping story was MOST amusing :-) and I will add it to my reasons of why I do not like to go camping.

Web cam sounds like a very good idea, though...
