The Quart Report
There there are...in all their frozen glory :-)
All totaled------152 quarts!
'Course we ate 2, but there are more than two quarts worth in the fridge. I simply ran out of containers.
In the end, I was scrounging up old cottage cheese tubs and was about to use Loren's suggestion of zip-locks, when the magic applesauce pot ran out and I called it quits.
On the right of the freezer, sauce from the Delicious apple trees. To the left of the trendy plywood divider, the pinker, Dwarf Wealthy apples.
The most we've ever had before was 99.
Ma had to be very tricksy in the freezing process. I carefully layered and interspersed 32 quarts of the new sauce with the previously frozen stuff to hasten the cooling process. Then, when it was time to put in the final 35, I had to dig everything out again return everyone to his proper apple quadrant.
It was during this endeavor that I discovered using gloves would be a good way to go, next time....
Hey folks, there are some things you don't learn in college!
______________
This morning I am off on another fun adventure....taking cans and bottles to the county dump.
Right about now I can hear someone out there saying...."Ma, how come you have all the thrilling experiences while we are stuck in the rut of high-paying computer jobs and other lowly occupations?"
Humbly, I must reply....."I didn't go through four years of higher education in music performance for nothing ! We all have to pay the piper, people.
Even whilst I wheel my way through the glam job of trash disposal, I will be sacrificing much. The kids get to watch one of the Rocky and Bullwinkle tapes without me! So no, it is not all fun and glory, even in these halcyon days of mental and physical decline.
Yes, while I will enjoy the privilege of listening to whichever radio station I deem worthy, I will have to postpone the mesmerizing task of church cleaning until this afternoon.
It will be hard to wait that long....
*sigh*
....but I shall try...

Ma, I can't help but wonder if you've done the math with these quarts. Let's see...152 quarts divided by 48 weeks until next applesauce season times 9 resident members of the Hoyt household plus ~2 members home for the summer factored by X for inevitable applesauce-burnout plus a couple donations to church potluck dinners...
My math might not be exactly right--due only to the fact I am a linguist--but are you really going to eat all of that??
Roughly speaking, it means 3 quarts per week. When added to a meal, we usually eat slightly less than one quart....though that will change while Jason is home :-)
Some of it is also slated for making apple butter, too.
If we have any left over, it could help take us through a lean apple year.
But no, we probably won't eat all of it in one year.
