Air Conditioning, Ants and Plastic Recorders
These past two nights have been pretty miserable, with the heat and humidity, but as of this morning, the air conditioning is ON!
It is most glorious.
Besides the so-muggy-I-can-hardly-breathe feeling, one simply cannot sleep well while sweat is trickling down the neck and collecting in one's ears.
In fact, it's been SO rainy and humid, the ants at the foot of the mailbox decided to move to drier quarters.
Unfortunately, this interfered ever so slightly with Ethan's collection of the mail...he was bitten most unmercifully by one, possibly even TWO ants, the woe of which he retold with great drama and agony.

Later that day, I took the three youngest on my weekly shopping trip. It may be pure coincidence, but the local crime rate does seem to recede if I make this sacrifice. Despite missing out on my blissful times alone, I've found it preferable to returning home and being bombarded by, "Mommy, I'm sorry to have to tell you this ("Oh SURE you are..."), but so-and-so did such-and-such while you were gone.
That tends to put a real damper on the whole get-away experience.
My mistake probably lies in coming home...
ANYWAY, I did indulge in more cheap toyage at Wal*Mart. Little plastic recorders, to be exact.

Yes, of COURSE I knew I'd regret it.
The above picture was taken by me, while driving. I would hasten to add that only a professional should ever try this. And by the appearance of blur, it is obvious I am not a professional.
I let Ethan, sitting in the front seat, take this next picture.
Nolan and Trevor regaled us ALL THE WAY HOME, mostly with various renditions of "Jingle Bells," played in differing modalities and rhythms, all atonal.
This was probably a good experience for Ethan, to get one small glimpse of what I have gone through over the years.
Ethan had the good grace to leave his recorder in the trunk of the car until we got home. No doubt, three people playing those plastic mechanisms of torture would have pushed me over the edge.
I kept my mind calm by reflecting on the Coconut Macaroon CRUNCH Ice Cream residing in the cooler.
There's no amount of stress that cannot be soothed, tamped down or even eliminated,
by food.

I might take this opportunity to note that perhaps the musical endeavors of the young might be counterproductive to the successful dieting of their elders.
Or, that I am terribly creative in my rationalizations.
That sounds disgusting - Coconut Macaroon CRUNCH? No chocolate?
So are you having the boys work up a trio for a special number at Ardith's wedding?
Oh Sharon...I thought the Coconut stuff didn't sound great and I paired it with chocolate, at first. But let me tell you, it tastes better all by itself!
Though, if Fareway's freezers are as pathetic as this last time, the ice cream will have gotten soft and then when it refreezes, most of the "crunch" is gone.
As to the special music, I'm sure we could come up with something. Nolan has been working especially hard on It's a Small World, After All.
(seriously, he has!)
