RATS!....Bats
So, it is really late, for me, and I am sitting here at my computer with a tennis racket by my side.
A little late night service practice? I think not.
As I was taking care of laundry just before bedtime, I heard a faint noise, and thought, "Great....another mouse." Then I saw something flying around and realized it was a bat, which is sorta like a mouse, only I hate them much, much more. And, unlike mice and snakes, I am actually scared of them.
Well, it took some time to FIND a tennis racket-having to procure a flashlight and go through the dark addition and out into the garage-but find one I did. Unfortunately, my swipes were of no effect, hampered by my hunched over position, and the many recesses of the unfinished basement ceiling. Oh yes, bats dip and careen and fly very fast. Sharon saw one in the computer room, but chased him back to the basement, where the ceiling is low and they fly at about face level.
Alas, they evaded clubbing and exited the bat cave.
Tennis rackets are the weapon of choice, as their webbing is sometimes not picked up by the bat's radar. I found this out several years ago when I chased one down with a broom in the living room. "Next time, use a tennis racket," I was told by a fellow bat-beater.
Other than the whirring by one's face and other annoyances of bats flying around one's bedroom, (yes, this happened several years ago) I have this totally unreasonable fear of rabies. I guess it has something to do with this story.
So, with the adrenaline pumping, it is just hard to sleep. Now, not only do I have bats to worry about, but I can look forward to feeling like a sleep-deprived zombie tomorrow.
I think if one more person tells me how this old house has such character, I will scream.
Here's hoping I don't hear one of the kids scream, tonight.

Aside from the rabies, bats can be vicious!

Bats are horribly misunderstood. How could you think of murdering such creatures? They are nature's anti-insect force!
And bats aren't rodents.
*Shifty look. Slinks off...*
I understand your proclivities to bats, O Keeper of the Cape.
However, when they invade my home, they automatically cede over their rights to survival.
