Ma Joke # 7
A Worship Leader, somewhere in the Bible Belt: "...and that concludes our morning worship hour. Let us bear in mind the truths we have learned from today's scripture. As pastor so ably taught us from Luke 10:38-42, we can all learn a valuable lesson from Mary. Unlike Martha, who was distracted and busy, Mary chose what was better; sitting at our Lord's feet and hearing the WORD.
Now, there will be a short break while the womenfolk make preparations for our potluck dinner. And may I say, 'Thank you, ladies!' You provide a wonderful ministry which we appreciate very much! Isn't that right, fellahs...?"
"A-men! (GLO-RY!)"
"While we're waiting on the food, men, why don't we put our time to good use and gather in smaller groups to discuss the sermon....alright then,
We are dismissed."

Well, if the women would just get up at 5 AM on Sunday morning to prepare the food, they would have time to discuss the sermon right after the service.
That's the spirit, Sharon.
Clearly, your mother is missing the social context of the story. By staying and listening to Jesus, Mary clearly showed that she considered herself male. Because students were always male. Jesus commended her for that decision and, as the Gospel of Thomas indicates, granted her desire.
The worship leader in this case probably just assumed that no woman in the congregation was that far along spiritually. So he used the story to draw the lesson that would be relevant to the men in the audience, and left things at that. Perhaps he didn't want to impose burdens too heavy for the womenfolk to bear.
Mmmm ... nah. I think I'll go back to my first reaction: Smooooth.
Very funny!
So fun to catch up on most of your blogs going waaaaaay back. (Is this what retirement feels like?)

--and I enjoy your attempt at bilingualism!
Ah now Sharon, the ladies don't have to arise by 5, they're probably already awake, what with being up half the night with nursing babies or kids that stand outside the door and say, "I'm scawohed..."
Wilson: (hee, hee) I can't think WHY saying 114 didn't make it into the Textus Receptus.
Rita! I have no secret concerning pictures. I have endeavored not to learn that much about the mechanics, relying instead on my tried and true method, getting lucky.
As to the bilingualism, I just do that to drive Sharon nuts :-p
