Notes From the Homefront
"Eating chocolate makes your energy level rise quickly. But if you stop, your energy level will drop just as rapidly. Break the roller coaster cycle, just don't stop eating chocolate." --Oct 1, from 365 Reasons to Eat Chocolate by Sherrie Weaver
I shopped at a different grocery store yesterday, and much to my chagrin, I discovered I have inadvertently purchased chocolate flavored chips. Ugh! How could I have been so foolish!. We were picking up Loren's new glasses and I decided to take advantage of the time to stock the larder. In trying to get the job done fast and cheap (failed at both) I managed to lay in a supply of brown morsels masquerading as chocolate. Maybe I shouldn't wait until next summer to get those bifocals. (Perhaps I will just palm them off on unsuspecting students somewhere....)
Played a new 3 CD set this morning, "Bluegrass Gospel Highway." Not too bad, I guess, though it kept Carolyn hanging about my computer. She loves bouncy music, but with her nearby it is hard to finish up that online Christmas shopping. And, apparently Nolan (5) has a tremendous memory. He heard "Wayfaring Stranger" one time and has been humming it over and over and OVER ever since. Unfortunately, he only knows the first two phrases. I am suffering from an extreme case of "non-closure syndrome." ("Ok, Nolan, give it a REST!") oh no....he stopped, and now Melinda has picked up the theme.....
I made mention in our family letter of Carolyn (9) and her sudden attachment to a previously cast off teddy bear. She has named him "Pooky," after Garfield's bear in the comic strip. She talks to it, takes it to bed, lets him help her with her schoolwork (?) and such. For some unknown reason, Trevor (2) has taken a sudden shine to this new companion, though he is fond of Carolyn as well. He bides his time, waiting for the witless bear to be set down for a moment, whereupon he hustles over and absconds with it. Jason (16) had to put little Trevor to nap yesterday and found that "Pooky" has a wonderfully sedative effect on little brother. Adding to the intrigue is another sibling, Derek. (13) Derek has recently brought his 8 year old birthday bear out of retirement and renamed him, "Pooky Killer." It is the classic love/hate triangle, involving three people and two bears. I'm thinking Emmy Award Winning Reality Show.
Kendra (15) received her first driving lesson this afternoon. Loren instructed the oldest three, but he has not been up and about as much of late. SOoooooo, I guess that leaves ME :-) Everything went just fine. The doctor said all the broken bones will be healed in 3 to 6 weeks. Just KIDDING.
We started out in the driveway and adjoining grassy area, just getting the feel of things. No, wait, FIRST we learned where everything was, brake, gas peddle, lights, etc. Adding my own little touch, we spent 15 minutes adjusting the rear view mirror for maximum makeup and hair combing performance. (there are some things a man just can't teach) After a period of idling and braking and coasting and braking and turning and braking and backing and braking, we ventured out onto the gravel road. One complete lap around the mile was made, meeting no cars and traversing no ditches. I think, overall, it went just fine. Next lesson: donuts and wheelies.

Chocolate flavored chips = bad.
Bifocals = good.
You're 40+ and not wearing bifocals yet? All those kids must keep you young! The week I turned 40 I started noticing my arms weren't as long as they used to be.
Is that why I can't see? I'm 42.....and the little writing on food labels has looked quite squished and blurred lately... Bifocals.....aren't those for "older" folks... *sigh*
Oh, and Becky, chocolate flavored chips? Yikes!!!!!
Debbie
"The week I turned 40 I started noticing my arms weren't as long as they used to be. "
Thainamu, this is startling news indeed! Do you realize what this MEANS? There really IS such a thing as evolution, AND, it's happening much faster than we'd been led to believe! *begins arm lengthening exercises* (I must go and eat chocolate and think about this some more)
Debbie, whatever you do, DON'T TELL ANYONE ABOUT THE FAKE CHOCOLATE CHIPS! I have a reputation to maintain. Besides, I am hoping to become the poster girl (and I use that term loosely) for DOVE'S chocolates, which, besides the glitz and glamour of promotional tours, I would, basically, have free chocolate for the rest of my life. (I think)
Fake chips - use them in magic cookie bars....the kind with coconut and sweetened canned milk....maybe the kids won't notice if you don't tell them...it is amazing what you can pass off on unsuspecting young ones.....under about 12 or so. I think my kids would rather have you fake choc. chips than the 25 "real, dead" fish is just stored for winter. I am not sure I told them that I wanted that many "fake or alive" ones to do anything with. Good luck with the chips
Uh, MoM, is it my imagination? Or did you comment around 4 A.M.?
Ooops. The night commentor has been found out. Still are having some trouble with nights and days from the surgery. Always been up between 2 and 4 am for well over a year anyways....at least i am having fun at that hour! MoM
Good--I'm not the only one! Bouts of insomnia are another one of those side effects of middle age+ just like needing bifocals--or so I've found over the last two years. Up until then I was always a sound sleeper, never had any trouble falling asleep, and never took naps. I still never take naps, but sometimes I have insomina.
Mommy will never get insomnia. She's still catching up on the last 20 years of us as babies.
Mommy, I hope Pooky and Pooky Killer stick around for another week-and-a-half, I want to meet them.
Wha...? :-) I see I should have read this last night!
