Here we have a picture......

 
....taken from "The Tire Swing Collection" of that decidedly lame, amateur photo-essayist, Ma Hoyt.

At first glance it would appear that the photographer has captured a simple picture of the sun, using her children's tire swing as a ready-made border.

But those of us with learning and expertise--not to mention graduate, post graduate and post post graduate degrees--beg to differ. We can see right through her silly, simplistic picture, so to speak.

The "artist" dares to show the sun shining, as if to say, "All is right with the world," when of course we know it is not. There are wars, famines, natural disasters and other forms of capitalistic short-sightedness. She has NO BUSINESS putting up pretty pictures as if to make a mockery of all the human suffering in the world. Even the angle forces the viewer to "look up," which we find hypocritical and unnervingly sanguine.

While she may claim the main focus to be the sun, the experienced eye sees another subject with entirely different ramifications.

It is a van. A 15-passenger van. It is ugly, abhorrent, and quite frankly, we hates it. It is the symbol of all that is bad in the world. It guzzles vast quantities of gasoline and carries myriads of children. If our sources are to be believed, at one time, TEN CHILDREN traveled in this van.

The artist has purposely included this vehicle in the picture to flaunt her blatant abuse of the earth's dwindling natural resources. Coupling the exhaust of the van with the exhaust of the small humans creates a carbonic effect too terrible to contemplate. We mention it only in the interest of enviro-friendly artistic education, and the hopes that our "Artists in Search of Global Warming" grant will be renewed next year.

Aside from the sun and the van, the observer is left to contemplate the black tire swing and the blue sky. Black? Blue? Is this not a veiled reference to a bruise? Is not the artist promoting violence? We did not notice the subtle insinuation at first glance, but further contemplation brought about an awakening of our inner rage. An emotion we have done our best to quell with careful attention to soft words, quiet listening and copious amounts of chilled chai.

That this picture could induce such burning emotions from within our highly educated and meditative beings, is a sign that something is very, very wrong.

We can therefore give no honest praise or support to one who would post such incitive and inflammatory photographs.
