Fried Brain for Supper
Suppertime with a bunch of children always brings a barrage of verbal exchanges. Sometimes these even follow coherent thought patterns. I think the basic flow of things tonight went something like this:
-queries as to whether cabbage salad was truly an integral part of the meal
-additional queries as to how much salad constituted a "helping"
-boastful comments concerning how much BBQ pork certain young whippersnappers would eat, before even starting on their first portion
-pleas to be allowed to have the cottage cheese without the added pineapple chunks--by same child with lustful eyes for BBQ--request denied
Enter: EVOLUTION (can't remember this transition, possibly in reference to foods tasting worse and worse....)
-(young child) "Don't even MENTION evolution."
-(adult) "There's nothing wrong with talking about the topic of evolution. You need to learn what it means so you can discuss it intelligently."
-(same child) "Well, I wish it could be outlawed!"
-(older child) "You can't just make people believe or not believe something")
-(same older child expands on the different theories mentioned in science book)
--Big bang, gap theory, theistic evolution....etc.
-adult mentions that dinosaurs couldn't have lived and died before humans, since death came with Adam's sin, and therefore the dinosaurs couldn't have died off before death came into the world.
-discussion centers on what life would have been like without sin in the world
-moves to "Why did God make Adam sin?" "He didn't make Adam sin. Satan tempted him. Man had free choice...." (and so on)
Supper breaks up, with young daughter following mother around as she clears, saying, "What I really would like to know, is, " *waits with baited breath* "where did all the names for food come from? I mean, like mushrooms? How did they decide to name them mushrooms?"
*mind goes blank...*
"Go ask the dictionary, honey. Mommy's tired." Tweet
