Musings on Baseball
Concerning singing the national anthem....please, PLEASE get professional quality musicians for the performances. Chicago gets an "F" for the first night. Given the choice between hearing a teeny-bopper girl with no-voice-what-so-ever sing, or whale music, I'm going with the large blue mammal. At least they don't get paid to sing badly.
The second night gets a B. The laid-back jazz trumpet/flugelhorn/whatever was much more pleasing, though, when I hear the national anthem, I wanna hear it performed in a rousing, inspiring way. Not like a mellow rendition from a smoke-filled coffee house. (of which I have absolutely NO personal experience)
Tonight's singer from Houston? An older guy, whom everyone but me probably knows. He did ok, I guess. Certainly better than "what's-her-oh-too-young-face." I always feel a little empathy for people with some years of experience under their belt. I think it helps, too, if they're out of adolescence.
Concerning who wins.....I actually like both teams. I mean, since the New York Yankees aren't in it this year, whademIgonna do? (at least I have a clear conscience. Unlike SOME people I know, I didn't pray for the Yankees (or anyone else) to lose (or win).
BUT, it would have been a whole lot nicer, if the White Sox win in the second game had not come about due to a funny call. If I were Dye, and I knew the ball had fouled off the bat instead of hitting my arm, I'd have said something! But, I guess honesty is just a little quaint for this day and age.
Concerning team logos....Is it just me, or does the "x" in "Sox" have a striking resemblance to the Nazi Swastika? Surely others have commented on this. I wouldn't know since we only watch baseball in the post season :-)
I mean, if people can whine about the Cleveland "Indians" and the Atlanta "Braves" (not to mention the Atlanta Falcons--who knows HOW many raptors out there are miffed), then what's "up" with "X?"
Well, that's it for tonight. The popcorn is ready, and the game goes on. More musings from Ma, as the situation warrants.
