Ode to Mother's Day
(If you're wracking your brain for a present, it's probably too late)

Mothers don't want a big to-do.
Stand up in church and be recognized?
No thanks.
We've been waiting half our lives to sit down.
Don't blow it for us, now.
Pretty corsage for the dress?
Nope.
Little kids smash it and frankly,
We'd rather have the cash.
Breakfast in bed?
Oh Please.
Best to keep a few mysteries in life,
Nothing's magic about "morning breath."
A laudatory speech?
No way.
It's embarrassing to be told you're humble and meek.
'Specially when you aren't.
A topical "Mommy" sermon?
*sigh*
Only if it doesn't involve Ephesians 5 or I Peter 3.
Save those for Father's Day.
Chocolate?
Flowers in a vase?
A phone call?
WHAT DO WE WANT?
It's simple, really.
Godly children are the best present.
But we might take the chocolate, too.

My standard answer to "mom, what do you want for Christmas/birthday/mother's day?" was always "good kids."
Then they would say, "No, really, what do you want?"
Yeah, I said something like that to Nolan after he said, "I can't wait until Mother's Day," and his eyes sorta glazed over and I could tell I'd lost him.
