Out Ioway

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of Heaven and earth,
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber.

All Sewn Up

After much popular demand....*waves to Debbie Currier*...Ma has a photo of el incisiono.

I thought the smallest photo might be best, to prevent being grossed out. And I cropped the shot significantly so no one would get a sudden, unexplained hankerin' for fatback and pork rinds.

Things must be healing because it's starting to itch like crazy. But I'm determined to leave off the band aids for one night so the purdy blue string can get some air.

How do you suppose the PA knew to use my favorite color for sutures?

It's little surprises like that which keep a body going. I feel new purpose and strength to get through the day, tomorrow. Which shouldn't be too hard since it's Friday :-D

For Your Enjoyment

(and postponing propping up and icing my foot....no, no, don't feel guilty)

Pretty nice day, and that spelled an opportune time for Loren to replace a few shingles.

Notice the robin's nest, in the dormer?

I was planning to show you a jim-dandy picture of my stitches. I took off the dressing and discovered my faithful sidekick, Carolyn, had gone to bed. So I tried taking pictures over my back, into the mirror. But when I popped them up on the computer they were not very clear and by then I'd already had Loren slap a couple of band-aids over the place, so we'll try again tomorrow.

In the meantime, here is a rainbow we saw, several nights ago.

It was extremely vivid, and you may be able to glimpse a second, fainter one.

This is the time of year when the blackbirds collect in gangs and swoop around in cool swarms, or sit in straight rows along the utility wires.

I was trying to get a picture of the latter, but they got spooked and flew away...
...however, I still like the effect with all the lines and angles going every which way.

Only two more school days left in the week...it has gone fast!

And that's fine with me.

Now, to ice that foot...

Ma's Afternoon Getaway

As a homeschooling mother with ten kids under my belt (mind you, not all at once) one looks for those little chances to depart from the everyday routine.

I mean, aside from going completely berserk, joining the Witness Protection Program and becoming a fish net repair-person on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

I had a Shingles follow-up appointment with my podiatrist/mole extractor, which in actuality is a nice PA over in Hampton.

And since I was there, I decided to go for broke and have her check out my foot which had been hurting me since August 6th, when I VERY FOOLISHLY agreed to play in a Family Camp softball game.

I didn't have on the proper shoes, and I came down hard on one heel (I don't remember if this was the time I made that spectacular catch out of Caleb Weikert's pop fly, or whether it was the time I tripped and humiliatingly rolled over in the grass. But I think the important thing to remember is that I did catch a well-hit fly ball, crushing Caleb's hopes and helping my team to gain a victory despite the fact that I am a lame old lady who never should have caught the ball in the first place, but what can I say except, there is a God in heaven and I caught the ball).

The PA thought it was Plantar Fasciitis but ordered an x-ray to rule out a heel spur. Trust me, she knew just where to press on the ol' foot to bring out the pain. All the way up to the toe.

Plantar Fasciitis, by the way, is Latin for You-are-SO-over-the-hill.

But now I have a good excuse for not playing in future softball games.

I asked the nurse if I could also get my flu shot, since I was in the neighborhood. But the real reason I went was to get this ridiculously large, itchy mole off my back.

So after the x-ray and the foot probing, Ma got taken to....get this...THE PROCEDURE ROOM!

Oh yeah, baby! White walls, a table, various instruments in assorted drawers, and most importantly, the cauterizing machine.

After getting situated, Ma got the needle with the numbing juice. This should actually be called the "burning like a hot poker" numbing juice. That was the worst part of the whole deal.

After that it was feeling the pressure of the scalpel and small talk with the PA and nurse. Like,

"You have how many kids ?" and,

"Your husband had a heart transplant ?"

We also talked about our mutual desire to go to Jamaica/anywhere-other-than-our-daily-setting. I think they could tell I was enjoying the whole procedure room scenario. It was right about here the PA made the comment, "You know, it says something about you, that you'd consider getting a mole removed to be a getaway..."

Then it was time to use the cool machine:

Ma: "Hmmm, I smell burning..."

Nurse: "That would be you."

PA: "Don't tell her that!"

Ma: "Oh it's OK. I've seen a lot of stuff..."

(she probably thought I was talking about things related to Loren's heart problems, when in reality I was referring to House, Bones, and CSI:NY)

Time for a bit of sewing...six stitches in all. She had to cut a crescent shape on each side, taking out skin and flesh around and underneath the mole--over an inch in length...then she sewed it shut.

After that I got my flu shot, completing the full spa experience.

Exam, x-ray, procedure, stitches, flu shot...it just doesn't get any better than that.

And to think, in ten days I get to go back and have the sutures removed!

Shopping Survival

It's not as easy as you think.

Today's excursion was made more manageable by the following:

1) When I left, Ethan was still away on a mowing job, which--upon seeing incoming rain--we moved up from afternoon to morning. It took longer than expected due to extra yardage. And though Ethan is far from being a trouble-maker, having one less boy in the house does provide less available incendiary material.

I made arrangements for Trevor and Nolan to watch two Penguins videos, as well as have their regularly scheduled computer game time...they were happy as larks.

2) This meant I could go alone :-D, driving with the serene abandon only a burned-out-mother of 10 can appreciate. I managed to hit several personal favorites on the oldies station. And I didn't hit the zippy red car that thought it would be clever and sneak past me when I was backing out of my grocery store parking space.

Old people in old cars get no respect.

3) Found a clearance neck scarf at Wal-Mart, bringing my fashionable collection to a total of FIVE.

Watch out, Versace.

4) Didn't get a sick check-out girl! It was actually the same young lady as last time (I was waiting in another line when she opened up a new counter and said, "I can help you over here..." I mean, what are ya gonna do?). But there was no grasping of the stomach and wincing this time, so I made the right call in not telling anyone at home, last Monday. Didn't want to to bring on psychosomatic reactions unnecessarily.

If there's anything I hate, it's unnecessary psychosomatic reactions.

5) Bonus martyr points earned for driving the blue Toyota in the rain. During the hot months you can almost fall asleep in the heat of no air conditioning. During the rainy season, the roof leaks. One has to remember to keep the visor in a position where it will drip on your leg, instead of the seat where you carelessly plop down after loading the car with groceries.

Drinking Diet Cherry Doctor Pepper and eating Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos can be a nice distraction when "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on Your Head."

And that's Ma's shopping survival guide, where movies, solitude, pop and chips, all fit together in a seamless mosaic of afternoon errandy goodness.

What a Weekend!

And it's not over, yet.

But pretty good stuff goin' on, so far.

This weekend was the church Father/Son Camp-out and for the first time, Loren was able to take the boys to most of it.

There were several years when Loren's health would in no way have made it possible, but everything came together this time around. Loren returned overnight (as did Nolan and Trevor) to sleep in a good bed, but Friday evening and much of this Saturday they were whoopin' it up at a campground, fishing, boating, and other campfirey activities, including golf :-)

The crew just got back and it was unanimous among the boys that this was one of the funnest, bestest, most wonderfulest times, ever.

Carolyn and I thought things were pretty sweet around the house, too.

There was sweet quietness...a lot of sweet not-having-to-prepare-a-sit-down-meal, and a fair amount of sweet eating-in-front-of-the-TV.

"I can hardly wait for next year!" Carolyn was heard to comment.

I imagine all the male-folk will sleep well, tonight. In fact, as soon as they came in the door the boys expressed how tired they were and "could they watch something..."

As luck would have it, Fox is televising a Yankees/Red Sox game, so the weekend's good times just keep comin'.
_________

In other news, I have a couple of updates on the prayer requests I posted on Wednesday.

Lisa Gullman is home from the hospital. She is still numb on one side and slow getting around. Not sure if the docs know exactly what happened, but Lisa is very glad to be back home. They say she may get feeling back on her right side.

As to Loren's brother Mark, the recent episode where the doctors could not get his device to shock him out of v-fib has led to incarceration at a Dallas hospital, awaiting further evaluation for transplant. As I understand it, Mark has been listed as a "2" on the transplant list. Due to his problem being electrical, he may need special permission to get listed as a 1b or 1a, but this could happen.

They might also consider another stop-gap measure, but it looks like the transplantation listing process has started. And since the past several weeks have been extremely trying on Mark, with feeling badly and all, he is relieved to be in a place where he is safe.

So thank you very much for your prayers!

God is faithful.

One More Day...

...until the end of the school week!

And with the exception of Monday and Tuesday, it hasn't been that bad.

Monday is always daunting because no matter what, you can't change the fact that you're starting a new school week and certain things have to be done.

Like getting out of bed and facing the family.

Also, there's that business of putting new spelling words on the computer, which is certain agony for Nolan and Trevor (and therefore, me). It makes that particular morning take longer, and if you mess up a word and have to redo the list, it really makes the morning take longer.

I guess we need a different program for spelling words, where you don't have to retype the entire list if one word gets entered incorrectly.

But when you're working in a free market society, and more importantly, working with free share-ware that is oh...20 years old, you have certain prices you pay, which in our case would involve retyping an entire list of words to compensate for one error.

Wouldn't it be wonderful, say...if there were people in the family who were computer savvy...I don't know, maybe in the area of programming or something along those lines, who could direct me to newer share-ware, or...now I know this is com-PLETELY off the wall...perhaps even develop a program for their younger siblings which would take care of that little hassle...?

Well, first things first in the area of technological improvement. Trevor would probably prefer a light sabre.

However, I did have something quite boffo happen, today. I was cruising through my Facebook page...you know, glancing through the thousands of mind-numbing copy-n-paste postings for signs of any life outside of being surrounded by fields and watching grasshoppers crawl up the windows, when I spied an announcement for free shipping from Christian Book Distributors, TODAY ONLY (!) for Facebook likers, like--me :-D

Oh yes! Ma had postponed buying the final volumes of a particular history course, and now, due to perfect timing of....something--maybe that satellite falling into earth's atmosphere?--I had hit the jackpot of free shipping opportunity-ness-itivity.

And I was pleased to see they had one of the test booklet/keys that I could not find, earlier.

If that isn't the equivalent of being asked to jump into a chocolate pool, then my name isn't "Ma."

Ordered and shipped, baby!

I is so, SO happy :-)

Couple that with tomorrow being Friday and I think there just might be enough moral invigoration to help the boys organize (read: do yet more cleaning of) their room.

Needing of the Prayers

Heart is a little heavier than usual, tonight.

We received word that Loren's younger brother, Mark, is in the hospital.

He was getting a new battery for his ICD and involved in this procedure is testing to see if the device will take him out of a bad rhythm.

So they induced V-tach and his device did not convert him back to sinus. He had to be shocked externally, three times.

Since that kind of experience means he is not stable enough to return home, Mark has been transferred to a hospital in Dallas.

Hopefully the ball can get rolling again for consideration of a transplant. Although I hear they have a few more stop-gap measures on the table, as well.

Mark and his family definitely need prayer.

___________

Also learned, just a few moments ago (via to Facebook), a mother of ten children out in California has just suffered a stroke and is in the hospital.

MoM, as Lisa Gullman (in California) calls herself, is a sweet, Christian lady who has battled a rare blood cancer and undergone a bone marrow transplant, earlier this year.

MoM has been good to our family, sending out gifts and encouragement during Loren's bouts with heart problems.

I would surely appreciate prayers for Lisa and her family.

Thanks very much.

Lots to pray for....*sigh*...

Another Thrilling Start to Another Spectacular Week

Today held many exciting activities. I just can't remember any of them. However, I do recall adding two more days of supper-dish-washing punishment to Nolan, meaning he has to get through Wednesday night. Of course, it could be extended in the the extremely unlikely event that he would get in trouble again, before the middle of the week. In fact, he needs to keep his nose clean so that Ethan and Carolyn can get back to doing the supper dishes. In FACT, it may even be possible that they are purposely ratting Nolan out so they don't have to do the dishes. Ever again. I must check into that... Somewhere in there I took our little 1986 sporty Toyota-without-air-conditioning to get groceries. Or, it might be that I took the 1989 sporty Toyota-without-air-conditioning to get groceries. We have so many sporty Toyotas (wac) that I often get them mixed up. I can imagine the same thing happening with Donald Trump and his cars. If I work hard, perhaps I, too, can become the Godfather of Politics. A Ma can dream, can't she... But getting back to la jour, I believe a couple of meals may have been prepared, as well as school finished for the day. Oh, and I walked 8 miles and cleaned up a few messes. In just a bit, Ma will really whoop it up and fold some laundry while watching TV. Yes, I can multitask, too. The day just gets thrillinger and thrillinger.

Just Me and Frank

Listening to the third of my 3CD Sinatra set :-D

The kids have finished school for the week and computer game-time for the day; the result being a break from academics and Nolan doing the supper dishes for the next 3 nights.

Can you say, "bad multiplayer X-pilot vibes?"

Can you say, "No more X-pilot multiplayer games for a very long time?"

Can you say, "mediocrity in dsh-washing for the next three evenings?

On the bright side, only 170 days of school, left! It's almost as if the first 13 have passed in the space of two interminably long short weeks.

But let's forget the weekly grind and move along to one of a more mealy nature. Even as Ma types, she is fermenting an evil plan for supper that quite possibly involves lentils.

Lentils...so small and innocent-looking, and yet capable of striking mortal fear into the hearts of young Hoyts.

But no matter! Due to their incredibly cheap nature and a....*cough*... slight miscalculation in food acquisition, Ma has two bags...count 'em, TWO BAGS of those brown/gray babies sitting on the shelf (that would be "brown/grey," in New Zealand).

I'll just tell the kids we're going with a sports-themed meal and very small hockey pucks on tonight's menu.

"It's only some paper pucks,
floating over tomato seas.
Pretend that's it make believe
And then you can thank me."

"It's a Barnum and Baily world,
Just as phony as it can be.
That's why I love make-believe
And why we're hav-ing len-tils (and if you don't complain too much I might let you have more cake)."

Ma Turns 35!

Er....make that 53. You know how it is with us old folks...mixing things up and all. Just as long as no one takes away my ellipses....

And before I get started with the birthday doin's, I do hope this post turns out, seeing as it is in the "new blogger." I had misgivings and have put off switching to their new format. But they've assured me that it's "safe" and "clean," so now I'm just killing time until someone shows up at the door with pure heroin and sterilized needles.

I'm KIDDING! People kid when they get old, folks. And if you throw in a burned-out homeschooling mother with varicose veins and "change of life," well...just consider yourself lucky you don't wind up impaled with a white-hot titanium spear.

Kidding again, of course!

Titanium is way too expensive for me.

(There, Derek...glad I posted?)

Ha ha...don't mind me, I am in a weird mood. Woke up a little bummed as I figured it wouldn't work out today for going to a movie and dinner. Decided we would just have the birthday bash meal and movie here at home, instead :-)

And I got bonus gifts by Trevor and Nolan finishing up much of their school ahead of schedule, and Carolyn and Ethan doing my share of the dishes today :-D Those kids are definitely in the will, as is Derek, who called earlier this evening.

I gave myself a break on the treadmill and only went four miles. And that was guilt-free since I'd already stacked up 4.25 extra miles, by Wednesday night. Hooray fer Ma!

The Mexican Chicken was a tad dry, but still palatable, and the tortilla roll-ups and chunky applesauce were fine. But the pièce de résistance was the Almond Joy Cake, or as they say across the pond, "Gâteau de Joie d'Amande." Turned out pretty well, considering it used sliced almonds bought back at Christmastime, ha ha.

Rich stuff. Even Ethan said it was fairly good, if eaten with chocolate, not vanilla ice cream.

I had been looking hopelessly among my book piles for a Marx Brothers movie I know is still there, somewhere: Animal Crackers. Couldn't find it and then ran across Court Jester with Danny Kaye, down in the VHS closet.

For a $.79 purchase at Goodwill, we certainly got our money's worth! Laughed ourselves silly. Will definitely have to show that to whatever older kids stop in for Christmas (Kendra, you are NOT allowed to look that up on YouTube).

Then we practiced some special music for this Sunday night at Washington Reformed Church. After changing the second number to a different song each of the past three nights, I think I've finally hit a keeper.

You have to be patient with old people, dontcha know.

Even if they're 35.

Weekend in the Big City

Ma had a great time over the weekend.

Left Friday around 5, though I was delayed by two things:

1)stopping to water some transplants at the Ackley Memorial Garden. And it's good I did, since some were looking a tad wilty.

2)transportation of Miss Kitty to her new abode in an adjacent county.

A smallish, orange cat turned up at the Hoytstead last week, making instant inroads on the sympathies of Trevor and Nolan. And despite Ma's warnings, "Do NOT feed that cat!" some milk, at least, was slipped to the feline.

And I'm sure it got a few scraps out of the burn pile.

I could see where this was going, and had just about decided to whisk the cat away during one of their computer games times, but eventually decided against the sneaky approach.

Instead, along with dropping hints earlier in the day, and then telling them, "We're going to have a serious talk about the cat, later," I finally sat down with them for the dreaded session.

It wasn't that bad. I went through the rules of the house that forbade any pets, even outside, and then we talked about how the cat was eating now, and what would happen in winter. Particularly when the temps went below zero.

This naturally led to the question, "What do you think will happen to the cat when it get really cold and there's no shelter for it?"

"It will die," came Trevor's immediate and sober reply.

So that led to my pre-planned plan of finding a box, saying "Goodbye" to Miss Kitty and taking along some milk for her farewell meal. I told them it would be a good time to do this, since I was traveling down to Cedar Rapids anyway, and that I would look for a nice quiet gravel road with a house and outbuildings or barns, nearby.

This was done, though I had to be discreet, so it was not obvious I was "dumping a cat." Miss Kitty was glad to get out of the trunk, into which she'd soon escaped from the air-hole-laden box.

Though she'd been quite anxious to curl around my legs in the yard, she was somewhat less willing to be around me after the kidnapping, but I did get her to come over and lick up the puddle of milk by the edge of the road.

And then I left and felt recurring twinges of guilt most of the weekend.

But I figured it would be better to take the cat right away, then have Loren deal with secretive feedings and the boys getting even more attached.
_______________

As to Cedar Rapids, I had a great time!

Particularly when I stopped being lost with an almost empty gas tank after taking the wrong exit.

Did get to use my new cell phone, however, which is a reminder: always carry your kids' cell phone numbers in your purse. I used Ardith's several times.

After dumping bags and changing into my "cool" outfit, complete with scarf in honor of Sharon. Then off we went to Napolis, to sup with Jason and the famed Josh and Anna Scholl, as well as amazing baby Grace and baby-boy-to-be.

They served Coca Cola products, which immediately put them in Ma's good book :-)

While our delicious pasta dishes were being prepared, out came a scrumptious salad and a plate of rolls. YUM!

I chose blue cheese dressing which was so creamy I couldn't help but utter,

"MMmm, this is SO GOOD !"

(to which Scholl immediately made comments alluding to the drastic nature of any diet that made a salad taste good)

By the time the main course came, Ma was practically full. But I made a brave attempt at 1/3 of my pasta sampler...oh my, so deliciouso. The rest is boxed in the fridge, waiting for tonight's supper.

Good times visiting with Ardith, Justin and Jason after supper, and then a restful night's sleep, followed by a 3-mile walk around the rolling hills of their southwest neighborhood.

Then, OFF TO THE BOOKSTORE!

Half-price Books is the kind of place in which I could spend hours. But 1.5 was enough to max out my gift card. My haul includes not only books, but
2 3-CD music collections; one of Handel and one of Sinatra.

*sigh*

Then it was off to another new dining experience for Ma...Vietnamese food! Great stuff, again. Especially loved the sweet sauce, though I bravely tried the hot sauce, as well.

For some reason, Ma had a hankerin' for ice cream, and Justin is such a sweetheart that he gladly took us to an old school shop for soft serve.

Yummo, again! And the weather was so nice that it was a pleasure to sit outside and dig into our generous ice cream portions.

All good things must come to an end, however, and Ma had to gas up the car and head for the north. Thankfully, Justin had gone through the roads and turns I would take in gaining access to the highway. A bit of roadwork in the area made for some detours but Ma had no problems, this time.

And thus ends another chapter in Cedar Rapids good timery.

Plugging Away

Put in 10 miles on the ol' treadmill, today. Woo-hoo fer Ma!

I've been trying to get the average back up to 7 miles per day, for a six-day week (usually take Sunday off, unless I'm low on miles). And since I was 1.5 miles behind at the end of yesterday, I wanted to catch up and stock up, because I'll be heading out of town and livin' it up, this weekend!

More on that, later.

School has been moving along, fairly well. It helped to have a routine established last winter, where I wrote out several requirements for Nolan and Trevor, and they know to get up, have breakfast and start right in on things they can do themselves, while I'm walking my first 2.5 miles of the day.

Still having a protein drink for breakfast (though I'm afraid I scarfed down eggs AND cereal too, this morning) and once I am recuperated from my treadmilling, it's off to the computer room.

I sit in a recliner behind the two youngest (not unlike a security guard watching several video screens at once). But apparently I still didn't keep a close enough eye on Nolan for the first day of spelling. That's when they type in their 20-25 words, and then practice them on the following days.

It was a "following day" and I looked over as I heard the "beep" of a misspelled word. It looked very much like he was working on, "confabulations" (or something)...a definite non-word.

This brought me closer to the computer and we talked about the possibility that he had mistyped a word from the list.

Then I began seeing very short words here and there...words like "all" and "ball."

Not only were they way too simple, but they didn't line up with the vowel sound on the spelling card (all the words on a list belong to a related vowel group).

THAT got me retrieving the original card, and after he'd gone through his program I had him pull up the base list of words and yes, there was the proof:

Interspersed between words such as "stringent" and "contingent," he had inserted "all" and "ball," and several other words insuring a swift run through.

I don't think he'll try that again, as I made him retype all his words and write out 6 vocabulary definitions.

Always something with that guy.

Tomorrow is Thursday and then comes Friday...Friday...FRI-DAY!

That's when I drive down to Cedar Rapids to cash in Ardith and Justin's "Half Price Books" gift card :-D

Oh BOY!

Staying overnight and everything!

Ma's little get-away, comin' up...

Labor Day 2011

Rather quiet, up the Hoytstead.

Children clumped softly and happily down the stairs. They had been granted a special dispensation to have cereal instead of eggs.

It looked to be a good day.

A dazzling, bright and clear morning with a touch of cool, fall-y feel to it.

And best of all, no school!

We'd all be looking forward to a visit from Jason, whom we hadn't seen since May.

He cruised the dark blue Camry into the drive and the boys were in heaven :-)

Loren took a look a Jason's car and did some tunin'...

...while the boys took to the swing set.
You can't quantify how much it meant for the three young lads to have some attention from an older guy.

Jason even brought up his bike, which he was coaxed into using.

Later that day, we sat around the table--laden with grilled burgers and German potato salad made from Irish potatoes--all the while sharing memories of Eugene Debs and Grover Cleveland. The meal officially ended when we solemnly raised our glasses of reverse osmosis H2O and repeated together, "The first Monday of September belongs to us and not the bosses!"

(I just made up that last paragraph to see if Loren still reads this :-)

Jason dragged himself to the couch to digest the meal, while Ethan diligently tried to organized some type of rigorous physical exercise, interlaced all the while with Nolan's groanings that he was "bored" and "could we watch something?"

Ah, family time.

With permission from Loren, all four boys finished out the afternoon with a "ride around the block," on the bikes. The first time for Trevor and Nolan!

Shortly after this Jason announced he needed to go home and get some rest.

Felt quite different with only one extra soul for the holiday. A quiet Labor Day, but a good one.

And sadly, the last school holiday 'til Thanksgiving.

Ma the Slacker

Well, I have certainly fallen down on my posting responsibilities.

Of course, I still post 99% oftener than Loren, so...

Same way with the Hoyt monthly letter. Ha...If the Hoyt men weren't married, there wouldn't BE a family letter. Though there has been a recent rash of engagements among the nieces which made made for a flurry of unexpected emails...

Well then, what have we been up to, Out Ioway?

Our school started this past week, on the 1st of September.

It's probably a coincidence that I'm taking a weekend splurge, already...going to Ardith and Justin's to cash in on my "Half Price Books" card and visit. Always a great time :-)

All I have to do is get through the next 5 school days.

And today I went, once again, to the courthouse for more weedin'. Three hours and I'm afraid I still have at least two more I could do, but we'll see...

Wracked up the ol' hands a bit, among the rose bushes. Yes I know you're supposed to use gloves, and I did, for a bit. But there was a ton of binderweed and when you're trying to find those thin little stems and where they start around the base of the bushes, wearing gloves just makes it feel like you have hams for hands.

I spent about 30 minutes digging out mini-thorns. I imagine there will be a few more show up that I missed.

There goes my dream to be a hand model.

Oh well, I was made to go on the treadmill. Speaking of which...
